Dermabrasion, otherwise known as surgical skin planing or dermaplaning, is a procedure in which the skin is frozen and then a specialized instrument is used to scrape the skin. The abrasive action improves the skin contour as a new layer of skin replaces the treated skin. The new skin generally has a smoother appearance.
Dermabrasion can be performed on small areas of the skin or on the entire face. During surgery, a high-speed rotary wheel is gently moved over the treatment area, causing the imperfection to wear away. The procedure can last a few minutes or take up to an hour with additional sessions to follow, depending on the extent of the treatment.
After dermabrasion, the skin will be tender and will appear to have a red brush burn or shallow wound. This will heal over a period of weeks.
