Ear Surgery

Ear surgery can help correct protuding ears by bringing them closer to the head, or reduce the size of large ears. The operation is unusual in that it is mostly performed on children, in this case, it is performed under general anesthesia. For adults and older children, the operation is almost always done under local anesthesia.

Ear surgery usually takes between two and three hours, although a complicated procedure may take longer. The technique will depend on the problem.

Sometimes the surgeon will make a small incision in the back of the ear and sculpt the cartilage, bending it back toward the head. Sometimes a different technique is employedm where skin is removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear without removing cartilage. Usually surgery is performed on both ears, even if only one appears out of place, to achieve a more balanced look.
