Microdermabrasion, sometimes called microderm, is similar to dermabrasion in that the dead surface of the skin is removed by light abrasion. It can be used to remove sun-damaged skin or to lessen scars. No anaesthetic is required to undergo the procedure and it is often performed in day spas and other non-medical environments.

The technique can also be used for treatment of acne because it cleans the skins pores and eliminated dead skin cells - pimples are usually caused by dead skin cells filling up the pores - but treatment must be repeated every 3 to 6 months to remain effective.
